UK sound system register
Every British sound system we can find, from the Windrush pioneers to today's crews: reggae, dub, dancehall, soul, hip hop, house, techno, free party and drum & bass.
Sound systems built British music. A crew, a stack of hand-built boxes, a selector with a box of dubplates and an MC on the mic: that formula came over from Jamaica in the 1950s and went on to shape lovers rock, UK hip hop, acid house, jungle, drum & bass, garage, dubstep and grime.
This register lists every UK sound system we can find, from Duke Vin, who built the first Jamaican-style sound in London in 1955, to crews like Sinai Sound System and Unit 137 still stacking boxes today. Each entry says where the sound came from, who ran it, whether it still plays, and where to find its official pages and photos.
Many of the names here are 1970s and 1980s sounds that never had a website. They played blues dances, town halls and youth clubs, and their history lives in people's memories and on cassette. If you ran one, chatted on one or carried the boxes, add what you know.
